IM LS8 Review: Steer-by-Wire & Yoke Steering Tested – Is It Worth It?
The IM LS8 is one of the most technologically advanced SUVs recently launched by IM Motors. Priced at 249,800 – 299,800 yuan (approximately $34,400 – $41,300 USD), this large SUV stands out with its optional steer-by-wire system and futuristic yoke-style steering wheel.
In this in-depth test, we evaluate how well these cutting-edge features perform in real-world driving.
Steer-by-Wire and Yoke Steering: Easy to Adapt?
The LS8 features a uniquely designed flat-bottom, yoke-style steering wheel officially called an “ultra-wide field-of-view soft-touch heated steering wheel.”
Unlike traditional systems:
- Traditional mode: ~1.5 turns lock-to-lock
- Standard mode: just over half a turn
- Agile mode: around half a turn
At low and medium speeds, the combination of a fast steering ratio and rear-wheel steering makes the LS8 extremely maneuverable, especially during U-turns and parking.
However, the yoke steering design can feel less intuitive during larger steering inputs. In daily driving, the “Standard” and “Agile” modes offer the best balance.
One key observation:
While the learning curve is relatively low, switching back to a traditional steering system may actually feel more difficult afterward.

Handling Test: Agile but Limited by Weight
During slalom testing, the LS8 shows:
- Quick front-end response
- Good rear tracking thanks to rear-wheel steering
However, due to its 2,620 kg weight, the SUV struggles with rapid weight transfers:
- Suspension lateral support is average
- Rear suspension shows extra movement under load
- Body response becomes slower in tight sequences
Interestingly, despite requiring less steering input, the steer-by-wire system doesn’t always feel more natural in fast transitions. The traditional steering mode actually feels more predictable.
Performance Test: Strong and Consistent
The tested top-spec version features:
- 1.5T range extender
- Dual-motor AWD system
- 66 kWh battery
Performance figures:
- Power: 530 hp
- Torque: 670 Nm
Acceleration testing (10 runs):
- Extremely consistent results (only 0.08s difference)
Mid-range acceleration:
- 40–80 km/h: 1.93 seconds
- 80–120 km/h: 2.62 seconds
This confirms strong power delivery and excellent responsiveness.

Braking and Safety
The LS8 is equipped with:
- 4-piston fixed calipers (front)
- Continental EcoContact 7 tires (265/45 R21)
Braking performance:
- Best: 36.85 meters
- Worst: 37.64 meters
The small difference highlights excellent braking stability.
Moose Test: Steering Feedback Still a Weak Point
In the moose test, the steer-by-wire system shows both strengths and weaknesses:
Pros:
- Fast response
- Minimal steering input required
Cons:
- Limited steering feedback
- Difficult to feel front-wheel grip
The electronic stability system is not aggressive enough for such a heavy vehicle, resulting in a final test speed of:
➡️ 72.5 km/h
Conclusion
The IM LS8 proves that steer-by-wire technology is no longer experimental—it works and is relatively easy to adapt to. However, it still lacks the natural feedback and predictability of traditional steering systems, especially in high-performance scenarios.
For daily driving, the system improves comfort and maneuverability. But for enthusiasts, it may feel less engaging.
