MG 4X Electric SUV Goes on Sale in China — Priced From $12,800 With Up to 610 km Range
SAIC MG has officially launched the MG 4X, a new compact all-electric SUV targeting China’s mainstream family EV market. Four trim levels are now available, with promotional prices starting at 92,800 yuan (approx. $12,800) and topping out at 109,800 yuan (approx. $15,150).

The MG 4X went on sale on May 27, 2026, joining an increasingly competitive segment of affordable electric SUVs built for urban and suburban Chinese families. The car is underpinned by SAIC’s proprietary Nebula pure-electric platform and adopts a rear-wheel-drive layout with a five-link independent rear suspension — a setup more commonly associated with vehicles in a higher price bracket.

Pricing
The MG 4X lineup spans four trims. The entry-level 510 Semi-Solid Freedom carries a promotional price of 92,800 yuan (approx. $12,800), while the 510 Semi-Solid Smart steps up to 102,800 yuan (approx. $14,200). For buyers who want the longer-range battery, the 610 Freedom is priced at 99,800 yuan (approx. $13,780), and the range-topping 610 Smart comes in at 109,800 yuan (approx. $15,150). Official MSRPs before promotional discounts run between 99,800 and 116,800 yuan ($13,780–$16,110).
The two battery options deliver CLTC-rated ranges of 510 km and 610 km respectively. The 510 km variants use a 64.2 kWh manganese-based lithium-ion semi-solid-state battery, while the 610 km trims are paired with a 53.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack.

Design: Evolutionary, Not Revolutionary
Visually, the MG 4X builds on the established MG4 design language. The closed-off front fascia features a full-width LED daytime running light bar and an illuminated MG logo — clean and contemporary without being polarizing. Lower aerodynamic trim pieces and an air-knife structure help optimize drag.
The side profile is characterized by smooth lines running from the front fenders to the rear, complemented by black protective wheel arches and side sills. Unlike many modern EVs, the MG 4X opts for traditional door handles rather than flush pop-out units. Body dimensions come in at 4,500 mm long, 1,849 mm wide, and 1,621 mm tall, with a 2,735 mm wheelbase — solid numbers for the compact SUV class.
At the rear, the Y-shaped through-running LED taillights make the car immediately recognizable at night. The recessed center section and black lower surround give the tail a layered, premium appearance.

Interior: Upmarket Touches at an Accessible Price
Step inside and the MG 4X presents a wrap-around “light luxury” cabin. A flat-bottom, twin-spoke multifunction steering wheel sits ahead of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, while the centerpiece is a large 15.6-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display.
The infotainment system is powered by the Doubao large language model (developed by ByteDance) and supports four-zone voice recognition. Connectivity options include Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Carlink, along with OPPO’s smart ecosystem integration for multi-device users.

Soft-touch materials cover 86% of the interior surfaces — a notable figure for this price point. Interior color choices include Yacht Blue and Starry Night Purple. Standard equipment across all trims includes electrically adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, six airbags, an integrated dash cam, an eight-speaker audio system, and rear air vents.

Higher trims add 256-color ambient lighting, front seat massage, a powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, steering wheel heating, 50W wireless charging, and rear cupholders. The top-spec Smart trim also features a zero-gravity co-driver seat with electric leg support — a feature that typically appears on vehicles costing considerably more.
Driver Assistance: Two Levels, Two Chipsets
SAIC has taken a tiered approach to autonomous driving hardware on the MG 4X.
Freedom trims come equipped with a Horizon Journey J3 chip, five cameras, and eight ultrasonic sensors, enabling L2-level ADAS features such as full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and lane centering.
Smart trims step up to the more powerful Horizon Journey J6E chip, adding six cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and three millimeter-wave radars — 21 intelligent sensors in total — for L2+ assistance. This unlocks highway navigation assist, full-scenario intelligent parking, and a sentry monitoring mode.

Powertrain: Rear-Wheel Drive Throughout
All four variants of the MG 4X are rear-wheel drive. The 610 km model produces a maximum output of 150 kW (201 hp), while the 510 km version is rated at 125 kW (168 hp). Both share the five-link independent rear suspension setup.
The combination of rear-wheel drive and a multi-link suspension setup is designed to deliver more engaging handling dynamics than the front-wheel-drive setups that dominate this price segment in China.

Verdict: A Well-Structured Family EV That Covers the Bases
The MG 4X is a calculated, well-packaged entry into the high-volume family EV SUV market. It doesn’t break new ground — but it doesn’t need to. With a clear four-trim structure, a choice of battery technologies, meaningful ADAS differentiation, and a cabin that punches above its price class, the MG 4X is positioned to attract practical buyers who want solid value without compromise.
Starting below $13,000 with 510 km of range and rear-wheel drive, it makes a compelling case in a segment where those attributes rarely come this cheap.
Pricing converted at approximately 7.25 CNY/USD. CLTC figures reflect Chinese test cycle ratings and may differ from WLTP or EPA equivalents.
